St. Dominic girls’ soccer remained undefeated and extended their current winning streak to 35 matches while Will Picha from Vianney tossed the first no-hitter of the season as many teams were able to dodge some bad mid-week weather to get games in.

Let’s get everyone caught up in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.

The Crusaders grabbed a pair of wins this week on the pitch to improve their record to 6-0 on the season. Josie Brengarth and Sami Roggenkamp each scored goals as St. Dominic defeated Incarnate Word 2-0 Tuesday night to open the week. The Crusader’s offense then exploded Thursday night as four different players scored in a 5-0 victory over Borgia. Grace Bindbeutel scored twice while Addie Biehl, Jessica Larson, and Grace Luedde each scored a goal in the victory over the Knights.

Fort Zumwalt South ran their record to 5-0 on the season with wins over Fort Zumwalt North and Fort Zumwalt East this week. The defending Class 3 champions opened the week with a 4-0 win over the Knights as Brooke Cattoor and Audrey Smith each scored twice in the win while Cattoor added a pair of assists in the win. The Bulldogs then erupted for eight goals in an 8-2 victory over the Lions as Smith and Lily Haire each scored twice to pace the Bulldogs.

On the diamond, Picha threw the first no-hitter in the area this season in a 1-0 win over Troy in pool play at the Midwest Baseball Classic hosted by Francis Howell. Picha went the distance in the win with five strikeouts and a pair of walks to aid the Golden Griffins to their sixth win of the year.

After opening the season with six wins in Florida, John Burroughs defeated Chaminade 8-4 Tuesday afternoon to run their record to 7-0. The Bombers broke open a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third frame and a run in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead over the Red Devils. Burroughs added four runs in the home half of the sixth to extend the lead to 8-1 and held on for the win. Ahmad Muhammad went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs to pace the Bombers’ offense while John Butka tossed five innings of two-hit ball with six strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

St. Louis University High School ran its early-season record to 3-0 on the year with a pair of wins over Belleville East and Mehlville this week. The Jr. Bills defeated the Lancers 25-7, 25-15, and 25-13 Wednesday evening as Jack Krausz finished the night with 10 kills while George Henken added 31 assists in the win. SLUH then turned around and defeated the Panthers 25-28, 25-19, and 25-12 Thursday as Phillip Bone led the attack with 14 kills and Henken added another 31 assists in the victory. The Jr. Bills have not lost a set thus far this season.

With the weather coming around for the weekend, there are going to be a lot of great activities taking place in the area.

Action in the Midwest Baseball Classic continues Friday as play in the championship bracket continues today at 4:15 with Holt taking on Fort Zumwalt West at West while Fort Zumwalt South plays host to Lindbergh. The top part of the championship bracket will be determined early this afternoon after two more pool play games are decided. The championship game of the classic will be played Saturday afternoon.

GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., will play host to the Midwest Jesuit Classic with four games Friday and four more on Saturday. SLUH, MICDS, and St. Dominic are the local teams taking part in the classic with Creighton Prep and Brebeuf Jesuit joining the area teams. The championship game will be played Saturday at 6 p.m.

On the track, Francis Howell Central will host their annual relays starting at 3 p.m. Friday while the Jackie Joyner Kersee Classic will begin Friday at 3 p.m. at East St. Louis. Priory will host its annual meet starting Saturday at 8 a.m.
