The Parkway Central girls and Eureka boys track and field teams took the spotlight in winning the annual Henie Holmes Invitational Thursday evening while the Seckman boys’ lacrosse team continued to have one of their best seasons in program history.

Let’s get caught up with a busy week on the Friday Fast Break!

The Colts girls’ team racked up 105 points and held off MICDS to claim the team title in the Holmes Invite. The Rams placed second with 101.60 points while Eureka placed third with 91.60 points in the first big meet of the season. Nnenna Okpara paced the Colts with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.64 and had a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.49. She finished behind teammate Kayelyn Tate, who won the 200 in a time of 24.70. The two also helped the Colts win the 4×200-meter relay in a time of 1:40.66 and the 4×400-meter relay with a mark of 4:06.22.

The Eureka boys took home the team title with 92 points while MICDS earned second place with 82 points. Timberland placed third with 74 points in the event that was shortened to one day due to heavy rain Wednesday.  Jacob Green paced the Wildcats in the field events with a second-place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 3.50 meters while Canyon Reed earned second place in the Discus with a toss of 38.86. Eureka added points with a second-place win in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 8:30.27. Brandon Mitchell-Day led the Rams with a first-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.87 meters.

The Seckman boys’ lacrosse had a terrific start to the season with a 5-3 record and has been ranked in the state top 10 poll for the first time in program history. In a 12-7 win over Parkway South Thursday night, Tyson Norris had four goals and an assist to lead the Jaguars. Eli Wingbermuehle also had four goals in the victory. Sam Siebert earned the win in goal and has an outstanding season thus far.

On the volleyball court, Eureka improved to 9-2-1 with a five-set victory over conference rival Lafayette Thursday evening. The Lancers took the first set of the night 26-24, but the Wildcats took the next two sets 25-16 and 25-19. Lafayette forced a fifth set with another 26-24 win. Eureka won the tightly contested match with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.

De Smet ran their record on the year to 10-1-1 as the Spartans topped MCC rival CBC 3-1 Wednesday night. De Smet won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before the Cadets took set three 25-22. The Spartans won the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Trent Massey led the De Smet attack with 15 kills while James Zippay added 10 kills in the match. Tyler Zippay handed out 20 assists with Riley Massey dished out 19 helpers in the win.

On the Athletic Director front, Jeff Taggart will be leaving Northwest High School to become the new AD at Parkway West. He will be taking the place of longtime AD Brian Kessler, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Eric Schorer was also announced as the new AD at Parkway Central. Schorer, who is currently at Orchard Farm, will take over for John Theobald at the end of the school year.

This will be a jammed packed weekend as the girls’ soccer world heads to Lou Fusz Soccer Park for the Parkway Showcase. Some of the top teams in the area will be on display this weekend. In a few of the big matchups, Ursuline will take on Fort Zumwalt South Friday at 11 a.m. while Lee’s Summit West will play Visitation Friday at 3pm Play will continue Saturday as Nerinx Hall will take on Aurora Metea Valley at 10 a.m. with Cor Jesu playing Sacred Heart Griffin also at 10 a.m.

On the diamond, many local teams are heading out to Columbia to play in the Rock Bridge tournament. Fort Zumwalt West, Howell, and CBC will be taking part this weekend. Parkway South and Parkway West will invade Busch Stadium Saturday afternoon at 4:45 p.m.
