Welcome to the Friday Fast Break! This will give our readers a chance to get caught up on some of the Prep Sports stories from the past week and we will preview the big games coming up over the weekend.

Let’s look back at the past week as we saw some huge contests in the area and some big news in the area as one of the Athletic Director positions was filled with a bug time hire.

Vianney named their new AD with a familiar name. Mike Potsou, the current AD and head boys’ basketball coach at Whitfield will assume the top spot in the Golden Griffins athletic department this summer. Potsou has been at Whitfield as the head hoops coach since 2004 and took over as AD back in 2015. He has overseen a Warriors sports department that has seen many of their teams compete and win state titles. Potsou will assist in the selection of Vianney’s new football coach this spring and will work with the current administration to ensure a smooth transition.

It was an interesting week for the St. Louis University High School basketball team as the Jr. Bills knocked off Webster Groves on a game-winning three-point goal by Jaden McClain Tuesday evening. McClain finished the night with 12 points in the win. The week changed for the Jr. Bills as they dropped a 71-55 decision to CBC in Metro Catholic conference action Thursday night. The defeat dropped SLUH to 14-4 on the year and 2-2 in the league.

St. Charles West improved to 13-2 and 5-0 in the GAC North by defeating previously undefeated Orchard Farm 41-38 Thursday evening. St. Louis University recruit Mia Nicastro snagged 12 rebounds and was 9-of-10 from the foul line to pace the Warriors in the win.

Incarnate Word handed Westminster their third loss of the year with a 65-33 defeat of the Wildcats to run its record to 14-0 on the year. This was a battle of the top two teams in our first Top 10 poll of the year.

Now, let’s look ahead to the weekend as there are many outstanding matchups in the area including the finals of the Circle 7 Shootout at Parkway West and another big battle on the girls’ basketball front.

DeSmet and Parkway West will take on each other in the final of the Circle 7 Shootout Friday evening at West. The Spartans head to the final after beating Parkway South and Hazelwood Central earlier this week. The Longhorns are looking to extend their winning streak to nine games with a win in the title game. Parkway West has quietly gone 16-1 on the year and is paced by Tyler King, who is averaging 15 points a game.

John Burroughs will look to get a big advantage in the district seeding as the Bombers play host to Westminster in girl’s action. John Burroughs is paced by Allie Turner, who is averaging 18 points a game and has hit 33 triples on the year. The two teams are in the same district, so the winner will take control of who may get the top seed in the tournament in a few weeks.

On the Illinois side in boys hoops action, Edwardsville and O’Fallon take the court in a huge Southwestern Conference game. The Panthers will look to keep pace with East St. Louis in the conference standings with a win while Edwardsville will need to get a win to stay in the conversation for the league title.

The top team in our Top 10 poll, Vashon welcomes Chicago St. Rita Saturday evening. The Wolverines are led by Kennard Davis Jr., who is averaging 15 points a game and seven boards per contest.

The wrestling action heats up this weekend with the Seckman and Kyle Thrasher Tournament taking place for the girls while in boy’s action, some of the top teams in the state will take part in the Kyle Thrasher Tournament.
