The Missouri State High School Activities Association spring championships are starting to shape up as many local boys’ tennis players earned their spots in the upcoming tennis championships in singles and doubles. The quarterfinals are set for the boys’ and girls’ water polo championships which will finish this coming weekend while the rest of the boys’ golf district championships will also take place Monday.

The MSHSAA boys’ tennis districts for singles and doubles took place over the weekend with many of the top two players from every district advancing to state championships at the Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield, Mo., on May 18-20. 

In Class 3, Shaan Patel of John Burroughs defeated his teammate Jasper Schmidt 6-0,6-0 to win the district one singles title while the doubles team of Joshus Tiemann and Danijel Blagojevic from Oakville won the district crown by defeating Joshua Lombardi and Maksim Bely of St. Louis University High School 6-2,6-3. In the district two finals, Rocco Regnier of Eureka won the singles title by defeating Edward Yue of Marquette 6-1,6-2 while the doubles team of Preston Achter and John Varley of Priory took home the doubles title by defeating Nicholas Chun and Aadit Keswani of Marquette 6-2,6-1. Action in district three saw Kyle Fisk of Howell North win the singles title by defeating Konnor Eslinger of Howell Central 6-3,6-3 with Pranav Palaniappan of Fort Zumwalt West won the doubles title over Tanner Jones and Noah Garthe of Howell Central. In the final district in the area, Rafay Cheema of Liberty defeated his teammate Alex Meyer 6-4, 6-2 to claim the singles crown with Angelo Malek and Luke Wortmann of Timberland taking home the doubles crown by defeating Tyler Gonzales and Elijah Bartek of Liberty 8-6.

In Class 2 action, Max Chen of Ladue won the district two singles title by defeating Arjun Purl of MICDS 6-0, 6-3 while Ladue’s Nathan Chan and Amit Kadan won the doubles crown by defeating Jai Patel and Owen Kizer of MICDS 6-3, 6-1. In district three, Ayush Negi of Parkway Central defeated Calvin Van Heest of Westminster 6-0,6-0 to win the singles title with Tyler Collison and Alan Walker of Westminster won the doubles title by defeating Kai Daudsyah and Winston Gao of Parkway West 6-2,6-2. Mabry Madden and Jack Stillman of Holt won the district three doubles title by defeating Patrico Bravo-Knobloch and Samuel Way of Missouri Military Academy 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.

In Class 1, Daniel Radke of Whitfield won the district two singles crown by defeating Spencer Pomplan of Clayton 6-2,6-0 while Clayton’s Arnav Poddar and Ismael Robles-Razzaq of Clayton claimed the doubles title. In district five action, Thomas Griese of Duchesne defeated teammate Nathan Nickel 6-0,6-0 to claim the singles title while Elijah Echols and Shawn Smith of STEAM Academy won the doubles crown by defeating Liam Cassidy and Isiac Salamone of St. Charles 6-4,6-4. In the district six doubles tournament, Colin Lovelace and Julian Cohen of North Point defeated teammates Joshua Hirschbuehler and Ian Malinofsky 8-6 to win the doubles title.

 

The Missouri Water Polo state tournament is underway with the quarterfinals schedule set for the boys’ while the semifinals for the girls are also set for this week.

The top four seeds in the boys’ championship remain after first-round action this past Saturday. Top seed Parkway Central defeated Summit 19-0 in their early-round contest while No. 2 seed Parkway West knocked University City out of the tournament by a score of 25-1. No. 3 seed and defending champion SLUH advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Parkway South 19-3 with No.4 seed Lindbergh moving on by beating Marquette 21-7. 

Here are the matchups for the quarterfinals that will take place Tuesday afternoon.

  • No. 1 Parkway Central vs No.9 CBC
  • No. 4 Lindbergh vs No. 5 Kirkwood
  • No. 3 SLUH vs No. 6 Oakville/Mehlville
  • No.2 Parkway West vs No. 7 Ladue

In the girls’ tournament, the semifinals are set as top seed Ladue defeated Parkway West 22-2 while No. 5 seed Lindbergh upset No.4 seed Oakville 9-8. The No. 3 seeded Vikings of Parkway North advanced by defeating Lafayette 20-6 with No. 2 seed Marquette moving on by defeating Kirkwood 15-5.

Here are the matchups for the semifinals that will happen Wednesday at Lindbergh.

  • No. 1 Ladue vs No. 5 Lindbergh – 5:30 p.m.
  • No. 3 Parkway North vs No. 2 Marquette – 6:45 p.m.

The MSHSAA Boys’ Golf district tournaments are taking place Monday at sites around the area while the Boys’ Volleyball tournament will begin later in the week.
