THE REDBIRD REVIEW The Cardinals have won three in a row, which probably would draw a big SO WHAT? reaction from the elite baseball units in Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and the other 12 places in the majors where teams are playing better than .500 baseball. Even with their...
The Backlash seems to be working. At least for now, anyway. When the Cardinals abruptly demoted catcher Willson Contreras after only 23 starts and reassigned him to DH duty, the incoming jolts of criticism rocked president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and...
I wrote my first response to the controversial Willson Contreras decision earlier today. In this column I’ll cover other aspects of what it means to move Contrera from starting catcher to DH, plus other relevant notes. Thank you. 1. Let’s start from the beginning....
Willson Contreras returns to Wrigley Field as a demoted catcher. After starting only 23 games at the position for the Cardinals, he’s been abruptly transferred to the DH spot. There are no set plans to move him back behind the plate in a starting role. Contreras, who...

THE REDBIRD REVIEW The blitz keeps coming. After another dull, zombies-in-the yard performance and a 5-1 loss to the Angels, the Cardinals are 10-20 through the first 30 games since 1972. I’m not sure what happened to the ‘72 Redirds, a ballclub that received...
“April is the cruelest month.” — T. S. Eliot The Cardinals spent the month of April in a free fall, unable to defeat gravity or most of the teams on their schedule. They reinvented the so-called “Cardinal Way” and reversed it by losing games in every...
