Fort Zumwalt West survived the weather and 13 other teams to claim the Midwest Baseball Classic Saturday afternoon while St. Dominic put together a great showing at the Midwest Jesuit Classic. Plus, there were a ton of great performances on the track to highlight the weekend.

Let’s get everyone caught up on all the weekend action in the Monday Morning Wrap Up.

The Jaguars scored in every inning as their offense scattered 13 hits to defeat Blue Springs South 15-5 in six innings Saturday afternoon to claim the MBC title, The win also pushed their record to 11-2 on the season. Dylan Bates paced the Fort Zumwalt West attack with three hits while driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times in the win. Ryan Ulm also had three hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs himself to push the Jaguars to the win.

St. Dominic continued to play well in the early season with a pair of wins at the Midwest Jesuit Classic held at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. The Crusaders opened the tourney with an 11-1 win over Brebeuf Jesuit Friday. Sam Birkenmeyer and Grant Richars each had two doubles and two runs batted in to pace St. Dominic in the win. The Crusaders then had 13 hits to defeat MICDS 17-4 in their second game of the weekend. Drew Meyers and Luke Shelton each had three hits on the day to help the Crusaders in the victory.

On the track, the East St. Louis boys’ team ran away with the team title in the Jackie Joyner Kersee/Al Joyner Classic Saturday. The Flyers scored 136 points to claim the title while Westminster placed second with 87 points and Belleville East earned third place with 73 points. Robert Hines Jr. from Westminster held off a strong field to win the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.46. Demarlynn Taylor from East St. Louis was a double winner as he won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.37 and then he took the 300-meter hurdles title in a time of 41.38. In the field events, Joseph Anderson from Westminster brought home the titles in the long jump and the triple jump. He won the long jump with a leap of 6.80 meters and then turned around to jump 13.65 meters to claim the triple jump title.

On the girls’ side of things in East St. Louis, Cardinal Ritter placed second in the team standings with 85 points while Westminster finished third with 84.5 points. Kankakee won the team title with 101.5 points. Aniyah Brown got the Lions going early in the meet by winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.19. Addie Draper from Westminster brought home the title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.80 while Brooke Moore added more points for the Wildcats by winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.55. Kyndall Spain from Cardinal Ritter won the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 47.21.

In girls’ soccer action, Notre Dame improved their record to 5-0 Friday evening with a 1-0 victory over Rockwood Summit. After a scoreless first half, Anna Pagano found the back of the net off a pass from Emma Selsor to give the Rebels the lead. Annabelle Rowe was outstanding in goal for Notre Dame as she earned the win for the Rebels, who placed fourth last year in Class 3.

It will be a busy week on the links this week as many of the top teams in the area will take part in the Columbia Invite on Monday and the Pattonville Invite Tuesday. There will also be a bunch of interesting dual matches as John Burroughs takes on Westminster at Forest Hills Tuesday and then the two teams will head to Forest Park on Wednesday.

The tennis courts will be active as well this week. St. Louis University High School is one of the top teams in the area and they will have three matches this week as the Jr. Bills will take on John Burroughs Monday and then head over to Ladue on Tuesday. They will finish the week with a match against Priory Thursday. SLUH is led by one of the top players in the state, Gus Tettamble, who was the state runner-up last spring in Class 3.

On the diamond, conference play will be continuing as there will be many key matchups around the area.
