The road to the state championships started over the weekend as many student-athletes competed in district competitions in track and tennis while the state boys’ water polo tournament had a full schedule of second-round matches Saturday.

Let’s see what happened in this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Wrap Up.

In Class 1 district track and field action at Grandview High School, the Principia boys’ team took the title with 161 points while St. Paul Lutheran from Farmington placed second with 104 points. The top four in each event will move on to the sectionals this Saturday. Issam Asinga was a double winner on the day for the Panthers as he won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.80 and the 200-meter dash with a mark of 22.06. Rex Health also won a pair of events for Principia as he took the district crown in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:48.02 and the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:49.71.

On the girls’ side at the Class 1 district at Grandview, Principia placed fourth in the team race with 59 points. Valle Catholic won the team title with 136 points. A’laijah James from Principia placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.61 to lead the qualifiers for the Panthers. Lilly Dow took third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.29 while Reagan Turnbaugh earned a fourth-place finish in the Javelin with a throw of 25.15 meters. The Panthers also saw all four of their relay teams move on to the sectionals.

On the tennis courts around the area, many individuals have moved on to the sectional round this coming weekend. In Class 1, Chase Glore from Potosi, Evan Veach from North County, Alexander Lebedev of Metro, Jay Grant from Lutheran South, Thomas Griese, and Nathan Nickel from Duchesne all moved on in the singles. In doubles action, Drew Keathley and Lucas Koch from Lutheran North, Liam Cassidy and Isiac Salamone from St. Charles, Owen Kinder and Andrew Lewis from Lutheran South, Nick Moran and Sebastian Flores from Brentwood, Peyton Cheek and Dreston Hoffman from North County, and Paige Wilkenson and Dustin Peters from Festus have advanced to the sectionals.

In Class 2 singles action, Arnav Purshottam from Summit, Edin Muminovic from Mehlville, Justin Jan and Jai Patel from MICDS, Preston Achter from Priory, Ayush Negi of Parkway Central, and Jaq Foster from Fort Zumwalt East moved to the sectionals in singles. In doubles, Colin Wilson and Anshuman Mishra from Fort Zumwalt South, Tave Markowski and Thomas Bambrick from Fort Zumwalt East, Kai Daudsyah and Winston Gao from Parkway West, Michael Ji and Jeffrey Liu from Parkway Central, Max Chen and Nathan Chan, Brian Tokarczyk, and Amit Kadan from Ladue, and Maddox Walker-Brenneke and Wyatt Bach from Farmington all moved on to the sectional.

In Class 3 singles, Gus Tettamble from SLUH, Edward Yue from Marquette, Lukas Burzynski from Howell, and Aryan Surapaneni from Fort Zumwalt West advanced while in doubles action, the teams of Konnor Eslinger and Andrew Black II and Tanner Jones and Noah Garthe from Howell Central, and the teams of Grant Dahl and Kathan Palagiri and Udaykiran Vissa and Gaurav Muthusamy from John Burroughs all moved on to the sectionals.

In the boys’ water polo state tournament, all four of the top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals with the top seed, SLUH defeating Pattonville 22-2, No. 2 seed Parkway West beat Parkway North 20-2, the No. 3 seed De Smet defeated MICDS 19-10 and No. 4 seed Parkway Central beat Chaminade 17-6. In the Jr. Bills win over Pattonville, Jonas Hostetler paced the offense with four goals and an assist. Will Bonnett led the Longhorns in their win with six goals and a pair of assists.

The quarterfinals will take place Tuesday with SLUH taking on Lindbergh at 5 p.m. at Burroughs while Parkway Central will play CBC at 6:30 p.m. at Burroughs. De Smet will take on Ladue at 5:45 p.m. and Parkway West will play Kirkwood at 4:30 p.m. with both of those games happening at Kirkwood.

The MSHSAA boy’s districts will take place Monday with the Class 5 teams heading to Aberdeen and the Links at Dardenne. Class 4 teams will play at the Golf Club at Wentzville and Crowne Point Golf Club with the Class 3 teams traveling to Franklin County Country Club and St. Francois Country Club.

There will also be plenty of action in the other sports as the girls’ soccer and baseball teams finish the regular season this week with district play beginning this coming weekend.
