Vashon and CBC came away with terrific victories over teams from the Illinois side in boy’s hoops action while John Burroughs took control of the Metro League with a big win over Westminster in girl’s action.
Let’s get everyone caught up on the weekend high school action with the Monday Morning Wrap Up!
- Vashon highlighted a great day of hoops at their own gym with a 49-42 victory over Chicago St. Rita. The Wolverines improved to 16-2 on the year with the win and will get ready for a huge match-up with Whitney Young next Saturday at the O’Fallon (Ill.) Shootout.
- CBC used a huge fourth quarter to defeat East St. Louis 60-54 Saturday afternoon in West County. The Cadets (13-5) trailed the Flyers 45-38 heading into the final stanza and outscored East St. Louis 23-9 in the fourth to earn the win. Larry Hughes Jr. paced the CBC attack with 23 points while Robert Martin added 21 in the win. Macaleab Rich led the way for the Flyers with 17 markers in the loss.
- DeSmet raced out to a 32-17 lead at the end of the first half and cruised to a 74-50 win over Parkway West in the final of the Circle 7 Shootout held at Parkway West. The Spartans (13-5) had four players in double figures with Dillon Duff scoring 19 points to lead DeSmet in the win. The Longhorns suffered only their second loss of the year, with both of those defeats coming at the hands of the Spartans.
- John Burroughs defeated Westminster for the first time in many years by outscoring the Wildcats 26-14 in the second half to claim a 45-34 win at home Friday evening. Allie Turner led the Bombers (10-4) with 15 points while Breaunna Ward added 13 in the win. The victory put Burroughs on top of the Metro League with a 4-0 record and can clinch the conference with a win over Principia in a few weeks.
- Hillsboro claimed second place while Whitfield earned the third spot at the Annual Kyle Thrasher Memorial wrestling tournament Saturday at Francis Howell. Jackson Tucker led the Hawks with a 4-2 win in the 126 lb. division while Whitfield’s Evan Binder was the winner at 132 and Chase Brock grabbed the title at 182 to pace the Warriors.
The upcoming week will feature some high-level play on the courts while the ladies will hit the pool as conference titles will be on the line.
CBC opens the week with a big contest at Westminster. The Cadets have won seven of their last eight games. The Wildcats are 17-1 on the year and are currently on a nine-game winning streak. Casen Lawrence paces the Westminster offense with 14 points a game and has hit 74 three points shots.
The Webster Winter Challenge begins play Tuesday with four of the top teams in the state taking part in one of the best late-season tournaments in the Midwest. The Statesmen will start action in the tournament Tuesday against Hazelwood Central at 4:30 while Class Six state power Rock Bridge takes on Cor Jesu at 6 p.m. Cardinal Ritter will play St. Joe’s in the final game of the evening Tuesday at 7:30. The semifinals will be Friday evening with Incarnate Word taking on the winner of the Ritter/St. Joe’s contest. The title game is set for Saturday at 4:30.
