Happy Thursday to you all! Since the Cardinals bullpen has decided to give up more runs than me at the Sunset Hills Softball fields, I need a break from exclusive Redbird talk. So, here is Volume 2 of the 2025 Sauls-Bag, where we only field the best and most pressing questions from my “friends” on social media.

*Disclaimer: These are the actual questions sent to me. The names or locations have not been changed in any way shape or form.

Wes Wingate, Columbia, MO

  • Can you provide Oliver Marmol’s home address?
  • Why is Nolan Gorman still playing everyday?
  • Where is Tink Hence?

We open with a three-parter! It cannot get more exciting. Let’s take these one by one.

  • Oli’s address: Send all love letters and fan memorabilia to be signed to 700 Clark Ave, St. Louis, MO 63102. Address it to Fredbird and he will make sure the skipper gets it.
  • Gorman? Because he is finally hitting like the man he is. In the month of June (through Tuesday) he’s raking .467, with 2 hrs, 5 rbi’s and an OPS of 1.436. Is there anything else I can get you, sir?
  • Tink Hence: He is recovering in beautiful Palm Springs where he has thus far tossed seven scoreless innings and stuck 10 hapless A-ballers. If this team corrects itself and is in the hunt in September I’d bet the kid will be in the bullpen.

Side note, Wes just released an amazing record. Follow him here and buy his music!

Mark Wieners, (Yes that’s his real name) Arnold, MO

Long sentence here: Do you think DeWitt went poo poo on the fans (specifically perennial season ticket holders) and deserves the below normal attendance despite the team’s semi-success?

To quote the great William Money, “Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.” Why care how the meal was cooked if it tastes good? If you buy a bunch of ingredients at Aldi and you make a cake that tastes better than one that was bought at Dierbergs, do you get mad at the owner of Aldi? NO! Good is good.

Dan Haynes, Brentwood, MO via Decatur, IL

  • Who’s your pick to win the NL Central, and why is it the Cubs?
  • Do you think we’ll ever see professional basketball back in STL?

Ah yes, Decatur Dan is back in the Sauls-bag. The Cubs will falter. Derrek Lee ain’t walkin’ through that door. Carlos Zambrano ain’t walkin’ through that door. The slump-buster Mark Grace ain’t walkin’ through that door. Their best player is a guy with a hyphenated last name and they have a manager that used to manage the Brewers. What a joke. They thought the Brewers had a better manager? The BREWERS, Dan. That would be like if the Steelers decided to poach the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

The NBA in STL. That is my dream, and a podcast I need to bring back. St. Louis is a top 25 media market, we have a world class stadium in the Enterprise Center, and we already have more NBA titles here than Minnesota, Phoenix, the Clippers, Orlando, Charlotte, Memphis, and New Orleans combined. God bless Bob Pettit. But, the league will want to go to Vegas next. Then, they’ll want to go back to Seattle even though Shawn Kemp is 55 years old.

So, that puts us third in line. We will need to steal either the Sacramento Kings and bring them back to Missouri, or rescue Zion and CJ from NOLA and bring them to the true home of the blues. In our lifetime, I doubt it.

Jeff Kraus, Richmond Heights, MO via Cedar Rapids, IA

Are you really “friends” with any Cubs fans or would you call them acquaintances?

For better or worse, yes, I have friends that are Cubs fans. The aforementioned Decatur Dan, the amazing Sarah Smith, the incredible Sarah Stone, and the greatest slowpitch softball cleanup hitter in history, Daniel Trivinos. Why do they love the Cubs? Two reasons: proximity of birth, and/or a love for Greg Maddux. All four are brilliant people, yet they still wake up everyday and recommit to liking the Cubs. The paradox confounds me whenever I think of it.

Tom Bartels, St. Peter’s, MO via A-Town aka Arnold, MO

Just a simple question and one I asked promptly when I saw him run out from the bullpen Tuesday night…. Why does Roycroft have a roster spot?! My exact words were, “Here goes two runs.”

Have you heard of a phenomenon in sports called “the due factor”? That’s the sole explanation for trotting him out there after last season’s 4.19 ERA and this season’s 6.92 ERA. On the bright side, of the 14 games he has appeared in he has only given up an earned run in 5 of them. That means that in 9 games this year he has been perfect! He closed the door and walked off the mound like an early 90’s Lee Smith…or maybe like a 2000’s Mitchell Boggs.

That’s all for this edition of the Sauls-Bag! Thank you to everyone that wrote in, I’ll see ya down the trail. Until next time, send me all your burning, or room temp questions on the Twitter @WillSaulsbery
