The Webster Groves boys’ golf team battled back from a huge deficit to claim the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 4 State Title while Priory and CBC each found themselves on the podium in the Class 5 state championships. It has also been a crazy week in district action as a few of the top teams in the area were upset while some of the teams that are expected to advance did so.

Let’s get everyone caught up in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.

Webster Groves claimed the MSHSAA Class 4 title after being down 12 strokes after the first day of the championships. After day one, the Statesmen trailed Rolla but battled back on the final 18 holes with a tournament-best score of 306 to win the championship. CBC wrapped up the championship with a third-place finish by shooting 623 in the tournament. This is the third time that the Ravens have finished in the runner-up slot while this is the first time since 1985 that the Cadets have finished on the podium. Fort Zumwalt South won their district with a 4-0 victory over Duchesne to keep their hopes of repeating as the Class 3 champions alive. Four Bulldogs found the net in the contest as Jailyn Brownlee, Brooke Cattoor, Ashley Miller, and Isabell Montileone all scored for Zumwalt South.

Notre Dame also claimed a district title with a 2-0 win over St. Vincent as the Rebels look to return to the state final four. Lucy Brann and Olivia Lane each scored while Annabelle Rowe earned the shutout victory in the net to lead Notre Dame.

The MSHSAA team tennis districts and sectionals were played earlier this week with many teams advancing to the state semifinals next weekend at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. In Class 1, Clayton advanced by defeating North County 5-0 and then beat Cape Notre Dame 5-2 to move on to the semifinals against Bolivar. In Class 2, Priory advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0 win over Cape Central as they will play Barstow while Ladue defeated Fort Zumwalt South 5-0 as the Rams will take on Branson. More district finals will take place in baseball and girls’ soccer over the next few days as many local teams look to advance to the state tournament. The MSHSAA Class 1 and 2 state championships will begin at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City Friday with a good group of local athletes looking to claim state medals.

The sectionals in Classes 3,4, and 5 on the track will take place Saturday as Fetsus will host one of the four Class 3 sectionals while in Class 4, many athletes will run at Festus and Mexico with hopes of advancing to the state finals next weekend. Kirkwood and Mexico will be the sectional sites for the local athletes in Class 5.
