It was a busy weekend on the track as the Kirkwood boys’ finished third while the Cardinal Ritter girls’ track and field team earned second place at the Dale Collier Invite at Kirkwood while the St. Louis University High School volleyball team won the top division at the Lafayette tournament. It was also a big weekend on the diamond as a pair of teams continue to flex their muscles over the past few weeks.

Let’s see what happened over the weekend in today’s Monday Morning Wrap Up edition.

The Pioneer boys’ track and field team had a great day as they finished third in the Dale Collier Invite with 74 points. They finished behind Blue Springs and Capital City in the team race while Westminster finished in the fourth spot with 56 points. Deion Brown paced Kirkwood by finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.22 and grabbed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 40.09. Ga’Darr Burks added to the team points with a second-place finish in the Triple Jump with a leap of 13.45 meters. Monte Weaver of Parkway North was a double winner in the event as he won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.88 and then won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.37.

At the Dale Collier Invite, the Lions placed second with 85 points and finished behind Blue Springs on the girls’ side. Kirkwood earned third place with 74 points in the team event. Aniyah Brown aided the Lions with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.57 while Charlye Moody placed second in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 24.47. Kayelyn Tate from Parkway Central had an outstanding day in the sprints as well as she won the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.45 and earned second place in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 11.83.

The Jr. Bills volleyball team won the Lafayette Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and defeated Chicago Marist in the title game 25-12 and 25-15 to remain undefeated on the year with a record of 23-0. In the title game, Phillip Bone led the SLUH attack with eight kills while Jack Krausz also had eight kills in the win.

Another team that is starting to make some noise in boys’ volleyball is St. Dominic as they won the Webster Groves Tournament title with a victory over Belleville East 25-20 and 25-19. The Crusaders are currently on a six-match winning streak and are 20-3-1 on the year.

The Eureka baseball squad grabbed a pair of wins this past weekend over Lindbergh to improve their record to 21-4-1 and has won five of the last seven contests. In the first win over the Flyers, they needed a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 1-0 victory. In the nightcap, they took a 2-0 in the sixth and held on to earn a 2-1 win to get the sweep. During the year, the Wildcats are led by Dakota Joggerst, who has a .377 batting average and has driven in 17 runs while Cole Edmiston is the ace for the pitching staff with a 4-1 record and a 1.08 earned run average.

Another team that is playing well at the start of May is Herculaneum as the Blackcats took a pair of JCAA games against Grandview over the weekend. The Blackcats have won eight of their last nine games are currently 10-6-1 on the year and are 4-1 in the JCAA Small School division.

Herculaneum defeated the Eagles 8-3 Friday evening and then went over to GCS Ballpark and claimed a 15-4 win over Grandview in the weekend finale. In the win Saturday night, Mason Gorza had a pair of hits and drove three runs while Cody Gibson, Dylan Jarvis, and Ricky Johnson each had two runs batted in to pace the Blackcats. One of the great stories that took place Saturday was that due to a scheduling conflict, the game needed a pair of umpires at the last minute. Mike Cook and Mike Maris both dropped their plans and drove over to GCS Ballpark to work the game so that the kids could play. A big thank you to those two men for doing that and helping the players get the game in!!

With the calendar turning to May, that means the district seed meeting for both baseball and girls’ soccer will be taking place throughout this week. Both state tournaments are shaping up to be very interesting as many teams can make deep runs to the state semifinals.

On the diamond, there is a big-time series that will take place over in Illinois as Edwardsville will take on Belleville East in a pair of games this week. The teams will play at Belleville East Tuesday afternoon and then travel to Edwardsville Thursday afternoon. The Tigers have a 6-0 record in the Southwestern Conference while the Lancers are sitting at 4-0 in league play.

In boys’ volleyball, De Smet will look to keep pace in the MCC with a match against CBC Monday evening at home while the SLUH has a pair of MCC contests against Chaminade and Vianney this week. The volleyball district draw will be taking place this Saturday, so every game this week will matter.
