It was an extremely busy weekend in prep sports with Westminster and CBC earning big wins on the court while three more players added their names to the magical 1,000-point list. Also, the Missouri State High School Activities Association completed its field for this weekend’s State Wrestling Championships.

Let’s put a bow on the weekend with the Monday Morning Wrap-up!

Westminster handed Chaminade of their worst defeats on its home court as the Wildcats raced out to a 36-17 halftime lead and never looked back in a 64-30 victory over the Red Devils. Kobi Williams led four Westminster players in double figures with 17 points while EJ Williams added 10 rebounds in the win. The victory for the Wildcats pushed their record to 21-1 on the season and solidified them as one of the favorites in Class Five for a state title.

CBC broke open a tight game in the second half en route to a 72-57 win over DeSmet to remain tied with Chaminade on top of the Metro Catholic Conference standings. The Cadets outscored the Spartans 37-26 in the final two-quarters of the contest to improve to 17-6 on the year and 5-1 in the league. Robert Martin led all scorers with 24 points while Larry Hughes Jr. chipped in with 22 markers to pace CBC.

Three players joined the 1,000-point club this weekend as the list has grown over the past month. Fort Zumwalt North’s Colin Turnbull joined the club in a 58-53 win over Washington while DeSmet’s Brian Taylor added his name to the elite club in the Spartans loss to CBC. On the girls’ side, Ellie Paloucek became the second Webster Groves player to make the list in a 62-45 win over Marquette.

The boys’ state wrestling districts this past weekend saw many of the usual teams qualify wrestlers to compete in the state championship tournament this weekend at Mizzou Arena. Lift for Life earned fifth place in the Class One district and will send five wrestlers to state. In Class Two, Sullivan earned second place in the team chase while putting eight wrestlers in the state tournament. Whitfield continued their dominance in Class Three by winning the district and will have an outstanding chance to win the team title in Columbia with 13 wrestlers heading to state. Seckman won one of the local Class Four district titles with 11 wrestlers qualifying for the state while Fort Zumwalt South claimed the team title in the other district with seven wrestlers heading to Mizzou Arena.

The top two teams in the Mid States Club Hockey Association Challenge Cup playoffs won the opening games in the quarterfinals of the tournament as No. 1 CBC defeated Fox in the opener while SLUH claimed a win over Francis Howell in their first game. DeSmet won their first game over Kirkwood while Vianney swept Chaminade to move on to the semifinals. In the Wickenheiser Cup Tournament, Priory advanced to the semifinals by sweeping Fort Zumwalt South over the weekend. Parkway West, Lafayette, and Rockwood Summit won their opening quarterfinal games and are one step closer to the semifinals.

This week will be very busy as we will see state titles earned in the pool and on the mat while the Metro Catholic Conference title could be secured as well.

Chaminade has a big week upcoming as the Red Devils will look to earn at least a share of the MCC title. Chaminade opens the week with a trip Tuesday night to take on DeSmet. The Red Devils beat the Spartans earlier this season with an 82-79 victory and will look for the series sweep of DeSmet. The Red Devils will then head to CBC Friday night for a battle with the Cadets Friday night.

The Class One swimming finals will begin Friday at 10 a.m. Class Two will take to the pool Friday afternoon with the prelims starting at 4:30 p.m.
