It was a busy weekend on the ice and the hardwood as the finals are now set in the Mid-States Club Hockey Association championships while three area teams advanced to the sectional round of the Missouri High School Activities Association Class Three state tournament. Local teams also advanced to the sectionals on the Illinois side in hoops action over the weekend.

Let’s see what happened in this edition of the Monday Morning Wrap Up!

Let’s start over in Illinois as Collinsville needed overtime to defeat Belleville East 62-60 to propel the Kahoks to the IHSA Class 4A tournament. The win was Collinsville’s 18th straight victory as the Kahoks are now looking for their first sectional crown in 28 years. In a game that was close throughout, Collinsville was able to outscore Belleville East 9-7 in the extra session to claim the win. Deante Franklin paced the Kahoks offense with 21 points while Nick Horras added 14 markers in the victory. Collinsville will now host Quincy Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sectional semifinals.

In the IHSA Class 3A regionals, East St. Louis moved on to the sectional semifinals with a 78-57 win over Highland Friday evening. The Flyers took control of the game in the second quarter by outscoring Highland 17-8 to take a 31-22 lead into the halftime locker room. Macaleab Rich led the Flyer’s attack with 27 points and 11 rebounds to push East St. Louis into the sectional semifinal Tuesday night at Highland.

Breese Central continued their season in the Class 2A tournament with a 46-30 win over Breese Mater Dai Saturday evening. Central advances to the sectional semifinal at Carterville Tuesday night and will take on Metropolis at 7 p.m.

In Missouri, St. Pius X from Festus claimed the Class Three District Four girls’ crown with a 40-24 win over Bishop DuBourg to advance to the sectionals and will play West County Wednesday night at Parkway West High School starting at 6 p.m. On the boys’ side in the same district, Bishop DuBourg won their first district title since 2010 with a 66-51 win over Carnahan. Christian Newcombe led the Cavaliers with 18 points while Dampier Evans added 16 markers in the win. Bishop DuBourg moves on to the sectional round and will play Kingston Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at Parkway West.

In the other local Class Three district, Duchesne moved on to the sectionals for the first time since 2015 by defeating Louisiana 54-35 Saturday night. Cam Lee led the way for the Pioneers with 16 points. Duchesne will take on state-ranked Monroe City in the sectional Wednesday night at Francis Howell Central starting at 7:45 p.m.

The finals in the Mid States Club Hockey Association are set as DeSmet needed a shootout in the mini-game to advance while St. Louis University High moved on after sweeping Vianney to set up the championship game in the Challenge Cup. In the Wickenheiser Cup semifinals, Priory also needed to win the mini-game to advance while Lafayette swept Summit to move on to the title game.

After CBC won the first game of the series over DeSmet 4-2 Friday night, the Spartans got a hat trick from Thomas Ruder in the second game to defeat the Cadets 3-1 as that forced the mini-game. The teams held each other scoreless in the extra session to take the series finale to a shootout. Nicholas Salthouse scored the only goal in the shootout while Spartan goalkeeper Brady Govero turned away all three Cadet shots that he faced to propel DeSmet to the title game.

The Jr. Bills won the opening match of the series with a 5-3 victory Friday night over Vianney, but the Golden Griffins did not go away quietly Saturday night. After SLUH grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third period, Vianney was going to need to win the game in regulation to force a mini-game. Vianney knotted the game at 2-2 late in the third period and needed to pull their goalie to have an extra man on the ice to attempt to get the win. Logan Petlansky scored late in the contest to give SLUH the win and a chance to win the Challenge Cup for the fourth time in program history.

In the Wickenheiser Cup semifinals, Priory, the top seed in the tournament, took the first game over Parkway West 3-1 Friday before the Longhorns forced the extra session with a 4-2 win Saturday evening. In the extra session, Charlie Walker broke a 1-1 tie with just 26 seconds left to push the Ravens to the final.

In the other semifinal, the Lancers took the first game of the series over Summit 2-1 Friday night and rode the hot goalkeeping of Konner Canova in shutting out the Falcons 2-0 Saturday night to claim a spot in the title game. Luke Carrico and Shane Robinson each scored for the Lafayette in the victory.

DeSmet and SLUH will tangle in the Challenge Cup final Friday at 8:30 p.m. while Lafayette and Priory take the ice for the Wickenheiser Cup at 6 p.m. Both games will be played at Centene Ice Center.

This week will see district action on the hardwood in Classes Four thru Six around the area with many finals taking place Friday evening.
