After the weather cleared and the roads became passible, the prep sports scene slowly came back to life this weekend. When things got going Saturday, we saw some terrific performances and a few upsets along the way.

  • The weekend started with one of the biggest upsets on the boys’ basketball side in many years as Vianney knocked off DeSmet 71-68 Saturday afternoon in Metro Catholic Conference action. The Golden Griffins drilled 12 three-point shots and made 24 free throws to propel them to the win. Brandon Hebrank paced the Vianney offense with a game-high 23 points while Adam Sausele chipped in with 21 markers in the win.
  • The Bank of O’Fallon Shootout did not disappoint as three of the four local teams claimed wins over some of the best teams from the Illinois side. Chaminade opened the Shootout with a 74-58 win over Mascoutah. Walt Straughter led the way for the Red Devils with 21 points. O’Fallon (Ill.) fell to Bolingbrook 54-48 in a tightly contested match-up. CBC outscored Chicago St. Rita 23-18 in the fourth quarter to take a 56-51 win in the third game of the day. Robert Martin continued his solid play for the Cadets with a game-high 27 points. In the nightcap, Vashon continued their winning ways with a 58-50 over Chicago powerhouse Whitney Young. The Wolverine’s only two losses of the year have come to teams outside of the state of Missouri and this win solidifies them as the top team in the state.
  • The Webster Winter Classic saw a huge upset on the girls’ side as Webster Groves defeated Class Six power Rock Bridge 49-45 in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Jenna Clark paced the Statesmen in the win with 18 points. In the final, Incarnate Word ended Webster Groves’s tournament run by claiming their 58th consecutive win with a 71-54 victory. The Red Knights outscored Webster Groves 33-21 in the second half to pull away for the win. Saniah Tyler led the way with 20 points for IWA in the win. Eliza Maupin paced the Statesmen with 24 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
  • Washington won the Missouri High School Activities Association District Two girls’ wrestling title with 146 points while holding off Holt, who finished with 145 points. Annelise Obermark led the Blue Jays by winning the 135 lb. division while Julia Donnelly was the runner-up in the 110 lb. division. Maria Slaughter led Holt by winning the 149 lb. class with a pin in 2:16.

Things will continue to heat up this week as the girls’ wrestlers take the mat tonight in the other district finals while hoops action will keep pushing forward with a lot of makeup games from last week. On the ice, The Mid States Club Hockey Association playoffs are now in full swing.

  • The third place and championship matches in the MSHSAA District One girls’ wrestling tournament will take place Monday night at Lafayette after having to push the tournament back due to weather last week. The action will begin at 5 p.m.
  • In a big boys’ hoops match-up Tuesday night, Whitfield will travel to Westminster for a clash in West County while Webster Groves heads to Marquette for a big conference contest. In girls’ action, IWA will look to continue their winning streak as the Red Knights travel to Visitation Thursday night.
  • CBC is the top seed in the MSCHA Challenge Cup while St. Louis University High is the second seed. The two teams await the results from the prelims and will open play later this week. Priory has the top spot in the Wickenheiser Cup playoffs while Ladue is in the second spot. Both teams won a pair of games in the open round this past weekend.
